Curtains

Curtains have got to be user friendly, whatever the scheme, it must work practically.

Every room needs to be approached differently, because every room has its own purpose, its own scale, with different types of windows and different views.

If your windows are overlooked from the outside, then the curtains should be functional, but they don't just provide privacy. Curtains can add warmth, especially if they have been lined and interlined.

Pelmets and Valances

These are different pieces of window furniture, separate from curtains and positioned at the top of the window over curtain headings. Pelmets are generally made from wood, MDF (medium density fibre board) or buckram and are either painted or covered in fabric. Valances are made entirely from cloth. Soft, deep valances convey a mood of relaxed luxury. Less common these days, lambrequins are essentially pelmets with arms that reach down each side of the window. They are usually made of wood, MDF or plaster to retain their shape. All three define the window treatment and connect it with the architectural framework of a window.
