Loose Covers
Loose covers are a stylish and practical way of dressing furniture. They can be used to disguise worn upholstery and mismatched furniture, to guard wood finishes from light and dust and to update and redefine a room. With loose covers you can self-confidently and informally bring texture, pattern and colour into a room without going to the expense of changing the whole scheme.
Loose covers can be used to ring the changes on a seasonal basis or to extend the life span of the fabric underneath, thereby postponing major re-covering. Skirts carried to the floor and shallow kick-pleats improve the figure of ungainly sofas.
Used as a flexible wardrobe, loose covers act as extra protection for your furniture. You can keep covers on all day for pets and children, then take them off at night for guests.
Treatment
Though loose covers offer the precision finish of upholstery for less money, it is the saving in laundering that makes them substantially less costly. Loose covers made of a single, colourfast fabric (no linings or trims) with a simple construction that won't collapse when wet can be safely machine-washed. Laundering or dry cleaning fabric before sewing will prevent shrinkage. Canvas, heavy calico and linen can be purchased pre-shrunk from professional suppliers.
Choosing a Fabric
Before deciding on fabric, estimate how much you'll need. The cost of loose covers and upholstery will vary dramatically according to your choice of fabric. Fire and safety codes restrict the choice of material; flammability, cigarette and match tests vary from country to country.
For upholstery, you need hardy stock. 'Upholstery weight' refers to the durability of a fabric. Manufacturers are required to subject upholstery-weight materials to a rub test, in which a sample is mechanically rubbed hundreds of times. Any good fabric supplier should be able to supply you with this information.
